If you have graduated in electrical and electronics engineering, you might find it hard to get a job in a core field and choose the right career path. Also as freshers, you may face more challenges such as,
- How to decide on a career path in electrical engineering.
- Which course is best for electrical and electronics engineers?
- Which field is best for securing a job? and many more.
This was my experience when I was fresher as an electrical engineer.
So, I am listing electrical engineering courses to help you choose the right field when you are confused and overwhelmed.
Job-Oriented Courses For Electrical and Electronics Engineers
1. Industrial Automation
If you belong to the core engineering field as a fresher or professional, Industrial automation is one of the best job-oriented courses.
In this course, we learn about the
- Fundamentals of electrical and electronic engineering.
- Architecture, components, and operations of hardware and software of automation control systems such as programmable Logic Controller (PLCs), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA ), human-machine interface (HMI), and distributed control system (DCS) in detail.
- Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) and industrial networking or communication protocols (i.e. Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP).
- Hardware wiring or connection of hardware devices (such as circuit panels, switches, different types of sensors, protective devices, actuators, and other required devices.

2. Electrical Computer-Aided Design (ECAD)
Electrical Computer-Aided Design is called ‘ECAD’ or ‘AutoCAD’ Electrical. It is a very popular electrical circuit-designing software tool.
In this course, you learn about designing and developing electrical schematics, drawing the circuit layout, and wiring diagrams.
Planning and documenting electrical systems, improving accuracy, streamlining the design process, managing the control system, executing electrical design projects, and many more operations related to the electrical circuit of the system, and other advanced topics will be covered in this course.
After completing graduation in the electrical stream, you will get golden career opportunities to excel in your skills in automotive, aerospace, electronics and telecommunications, robotics, and other core industries.
3. Electrical Transient Analyser Program (ETAP)
An ETAP is electrical schematics and design software like ECAD software. This software tool plays an important role in the modeling and simulation of electrical networks.
In electrical power systems (EPS), ETAP is very essential for designing, analyzing, and optimizing power networks and systems. Moreover, it facilitates system analysis, protective scheme coordination, and the management and execution of power system projects from conception to completion.
If you are studying and understanding this concept in detail, you can apply for various positions (such as electrical engineer, power system engineer, substation engineer, protection engineer, energy analyst, and project manager).
4. Embedded Systems and IoT
If you belong to electronic engineering, firstly I would prefer the embedded systems and IoT course.
Modern electronic system depends on microcontrollers which a compact size chips that consist of a microprocessor, memory, and input/output connections.
This course covers basic knowledge of embedded systems with useful tools, the study of microcontroller and microprocessor programming, communication protocols, real-time operating systems (RTOS), networking and cloud integration, IoT security, etc.
In industrial automation, automotive, consumer electronics, telecommunication, aerospace and defense, and robotics industries, embedded systems and IoT are very crucial.
With this smart technology, you can greatly enhance your skills and open up various career opportunities for placement with good packages.
5. Electric Vehicle (EV)
Electric Vehicle (EV) technology teaches how to create and maintain electric vehicles (for example, E-bikes, boats, aircraft, buses, cars, trams, etc.).
From the environmental perspective and smart innovations, EV technology comes with a bright future over fuel vehicles. Now it offers good opportunities for electrical engineers in EV manufacturing, charging stations, researching batteries, and sustainable energy.
There are many automotive companies (such as Tesla, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Ford, etc.) as well as product-based electronics companies (such as Panasonic, LG Chem, Samsung SDI, etc.) involved in EV technology.
6. Renewable Energy Systems
If you are interested in exploring knowledge on energy or power generation, development, and utilization of sustainable energy sources (like solar, wind, and hydropower), you can choose this course.
This field provides many career opportunities in renewable energy industries.
7. Power Systems and Smart Grid Technology
The power systems and smart grid technology course covers all the basic concepts of power systems, management, and optimization of power distribution, generation, and transmission systems.
Study the integration of renewable energy sources, and implementing smart grid technologies.
To excel in your skills and knowledge in power systems and smart grid specialization, this course is ideal for electrical engineering graduates and professionals.
8. VLSI Design
In the VLSI Design course, you learn how to create small electronic circuits or ICs (known as integrated circuits) which consist of millions of transistors on a single chip.
Also, fundamentals of VLSI design, electronics circuit layout design, VLSI tools, CMOS technology, logic design, circuit design techniques, timing analysis, power optimization, design for testability, verification techniques, and advanced VLSI concepts are included in this course.
The electronics and telecommunications engineering graduates who belong to electronic professionals get more golden career opportunities in semiconductor companies, electronics research, and technology innovation.
9. Cybersecurity for Industrial Control Systems
Cybersecurity for industrial control system courses offer training on protecting and securing industrial control systems from cyber threats.
The course covers strategies to safeguard control systems like SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) from cyber threats and attacks.
This course is highly recommended for the job role of Cybersecurity Engineer, ICS Security Analyst.
10. HVAC
An HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning) system course focuses on designing and managing HVAC systems.
This course prepares you for positions like HVAC technicians, installers, or maintenance specialists across different industries.
11. Electrical Safety and Compliance
Electrical safety and compliance training focuses on specific skills for ensuring safety and following regulations in electrical systems.
Understanding these aspects is crucial for qualifying for industrial-level roles as Electrical Safety Engineers and Compliance Officers.
Many institutes or online platforms (such as Udemy, edX, Coursera, etc.) offer these courses with certificates.
All these job-oriented courses for EEE or EE or ECE. In an upcoming article, I will explain each course in more detail.
