In this post, I am sharing a list of basic electrical laws and theorems. Listing out these laws and theorems will be helpful for electrical students.
All these different laws and theorems belong to electrical and electronic studies.
Before this article, I have explained the concept of an electrical circuit. They are used to solve the electrical network.
To solve these electrical circuits, you also need to apply multiple Electrical Laws and Theorems so that you can calculate the required values for various parameters.
Some laws apply to the AC and DC systems.
Let’s see the most important electrical Laws, theorems, and rules, one by one.
What are the basic Laws of Electrical Engineering?
Here are listing of the most important top 13 electrical and electronics laws.
1. Ohm’s Law
Learn here detail, electric ohm’s law
Here is a simple calculator to calculate Current from Resistance and Voltage using Ohm’s law.

2.Electric and Magnetic Circuits Kirchhoff Law
There are two types of Kirchhoff’s Law.
- Kirchhoff Current Law
- Kirchhoff Voltage Law
Learn more detail about Kirchhoff’s law. I have explained the applications.
3. Joule’s Law of Electrical Heating Effect
- First Law of Joule
- Second Law of Joule
4. Newton Law of Motions (Physics laws)
- First Law of Newton
- Second Law of Newton
- Third Law of Newton
Note: These are Physics laws and also useful in Electrical.
5. Electrostatic (Coloumb) Law
- First Law of Electrostatic
- Second Law or Coloumb Law of Electrostatic
6. Faraday’s Law Of Electromagnetic Induction
- First Law of Faraday
- Second Law Faraday
- Third Law or Lenz’s Law of Faraday
7. Biot Savart Law for Electric and Magnetic field
8. Ampere’s Circuital Law
9. Gauss’s Law
10. Lenz’s Law
11. Curie’s Law
12. Hopkinson’s Law
13. Wiedemann–Franz law
These list of electrical laws are applicable to both electrical and magnetic circuit.
Electrical and Electronic Network Theorems
In the electrical and electronic circuit, theorems help to simplify and to analyze the network.
Mostly these theorems are useful for the DC sources.
Here is the list of 9 theorems.
- Superposition Theorem
- Thevenin Theorem
- Norton Theorem
- Millman’s Theorem
- Reciprocity Theorem
- Compensation Theorem
- Maximum power transfer Theorem
- Star-Delta transformation Theorem
- Delta-Star transformation Theorem
Electrical Machines Rule
The most important rule in electrical machines study is Fleming’s rule. Mainly, this rule is used for motors and generators.
Following are two Fleming’s rules for Machines:
- Fleming’s Right-Hand Rule
- Fleming’s Left-Hand Rule
The first right-hand rule is applicable to the generators. And the second left-hand rule is applicable to the motors.
This article is all about listing different basic electrical laws and theorems. I will explain each law and theorem in my upcoming articles.
Thanks for reading!
I have completed master in Electrical Power System. I work and write technical tutorials on the PLC, MATLAB programming, and Electrical on DipsLab.com portal.
Sharing my knowledge on this blog makes me happy. And sometimes I delve in Python programming.
Hi Dipali Ji,
Please, can you explain in more details about below theorems?
Star-Delta transformation Theorem
Delta-Star transformation Theorem
Thanks.
Hello, Muqtar
Firstly thanks a lot for suggesting to me.
Sure, I will explain these theorems with the details in my upcoming article.
wonderful thanks alot..
You’re most welcome, Mohamed!
Really helpful for me.
Thank you, Thangam.
Hello Dipali,
Please share an article about on dimension formulas of related to Electrical Engineering.
Hie Rajnish,
Kindly, what point do you want me clear? Please, elaborate.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. If you share the explanation of each theorems, it would be grateful.
Hi Kris,
Thanks for suggesting. Soon, I will explain each electrical theorem one by one.
Hello
Why didn’t you add Lenz’s law?
Thanks, Ramu for sharing this law. I added this law.
Thank you Dipali.
You’re welcome 🙂
Hi Dipali,
Please, can you explain in detail?
Hey, Akshay
I have already covered two laws out of this list. Surely, I will explain all these laws and theorems one by one.
Hi Dipali,
Please, can you explain Wiedeman Franz law in detail?
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I will try to share soon.
Hi, Dipali Ma’am can you teach me all the law’s and theorem’s .
I’ll be very thankful to you.
Thanks for reaching, Rahul. I have explained basics electrical laws (like Ohm’s Law and Kirchhoff’s Law). Soon, I will try to cover all these laws and theorems.
Hi, Thanks for the list of laws
This is inspiring…keep it up

thanks a lot
Thanks a lot ma’am.
You’re welcome.
What about series and parallel connection of the resistor?
The key difference are: In series, total resistance increases and current decreases. In parallel, total resistance decreases and total current increases.
