11 Difference between Stator and Rotor of an Electrical Machine

Electrical and Electronics Engineering feature image

In an electrical machine (especially a motor and a generator), the stator and rotor are the essential components. These two components help to build the electromagnetic force due to the interaction between them.

The generated electromagnetic force activates the rotating system in terms of electrical or mechanical energy.

Both components of the machine are inbuilt in the same machine. But, they have different functions and other specifications.

In this article, we are going to study what is the difference between stator and rotor of an electrical machine.

Stator Vs. Rotor [In Tubular Form]

#ContentStatorRotor
01What is stator and rotor? The stator is a stationary (or fixed) part of an electrical motor. The rotor is a rotating (or moving) part of an electrical motor.
02How are name of stator & rotor derived? From the stationary part of the motor, the stator’s name is obtained. From the rotating part of the motor, the rotor’s name is obtained.
03ConstructionThe stator is situated outside the rotor. The rotor is situated inside the core of the stator.
04Inbuilt parts of stator and rotor in motorIt consists of three main parts such as core, winding, and outer frame. It consists of two main parts such as core and field winding.
05Power SourceBasically, the stator’s winding requires an AC (three-phase) supply. The rotor requires a DC supply to generate a rotating field.
06Winding
Setup
In the stator, the winding arrangement is more difficult as compared to the rotor. In the rotor, the winding arrangement is simple as compared to the stator.
07Winding
Size
The stator has large size winding. Rotor winding finds in a small size.
08WeightThe stator (or core) winding has more weight as compared to the rotor. The rotor winding occurs in lightweight as compared to the stator.
09InsulationHigh insulation is provided in the stator winding to carry heavy current.Low insulation is provided in the rotor winding.
10Friction LossesMore friction losses occur in the stator.Fewer friction losses occur in the rotor.
11Cooling
System.
The cooling system of stator is easy. The cooling system of the rotor is difficult.

These are the main difference between stator and rotor. Hope each point is clear.
