Best IIT, NIT for MTech in VLSI through GATE 2024 for EE and ECE Students

Are you looking for top colleges for VLSI design for MTech through GATE 2024?

VLSI is one of the very popular specializations in the Electronics and Communication Engineering branch.

If you ask me, VLSI and Embedded systems have more future scope and demand as compared to other Electronics and Communication Engineering specializations.

There are a lot of IITs, NITs, BITs, and other repeated institutes which offer VLSI courses for MTech.

What are the eligibility criteria to get into top Institutes for MTech in VLSI?

  • You have to qualify for the GATE exam with a good rank.
  • EE and ECE candidates are allowed for VLSI admission. Some colleges offer VLSI admission only for ECE students.
  • Every college has a different cut-off for admission. I will talk about that below.

Electrical and Electronics are the two different engineering branches. Engineering students from both fields can opt for MTech in VLSI.

What are the top IIT, NIT Colleges for MTech in VLSI Design for ECE?

Getting into any of the IITs, NITs, and BITs itself is a big accomplishment. Still, here are the institutes I’m listing here based on the rank and college cutoff.

  1. IIT, Mumbai
  2. IIT, Madras
  3. IIT, Delhi
  4. IIT, Kanpur
  5. IIT, Kharagpur
  6. IISC, Bangalore
  7. IIT, Guwahati
  8. IIT, Roorkee
  9. BITS, Pilani
  10. NIT, Trichy
  11. NIT, Warangal
  12. NIT, Suratkal
  13. NIT, Calicut
  14. ISMU, Dhanbad
  15. NIT, Rourkela
  16. IIT, Indore
  17. IIT, Mandi
  18. College of Engineering, Pune (COEP)

Many other institutes are offering VLSI courses. This list covers only the top 18 institutes.

IIT Guwahati allows only ECE students (not EE students) for VLSI.

Note: In some colleges, “Integrated Electronics and Circuits” is nothing but the VLSI specialization.

What College You can get based on your GATE Rank?

AIR 50 and below:

If you have GATE AIR less than 50, most probably, you will get a call from IIT Bombay and IIT Madras. You can choose anyone. Based on the statistics, IIT Bombay is a better choice than IIIT Madras in terms of academics and placement.

AIR 50-120:

With this rank, you can get a call from IIT Madras.

AIR 120-500:

If your rank is lower than 500, you can expect admission in the top three-four institutes.

The candidates with having GATE All India rank below 500 have good chances for PSU jobs. If you are interested in government jobs, prepare for the PSU interview. There are more than 45 PSUs in India.

AIR 500-1000:

If your GATE AIR rank is between 500 and 1000, you can expect the next top four-five institutes.

AIR 1000-1500:

For the candidates having rank between 1000 to 1500, they can try top NIT colleges like NIT Trichy, NIT Suratkal and NIT Warangal.

AIR 1500 and Above:

For other candidates having a GATE rank more than 1500, it’s very difficult to get admission in top institutes for MTech in VLSI. If you still want to take the admission, you can try the other remaining colleges.

If it is your aim to get into the top IIT, you can prepare for next year’s GATE exam. Read the GATE strategy followed by Sayanatan Bhattacharya (AIR 5).

In terms of placement and job opportunities, it’s good to get admission in the top 7-8 institutes. In other colleges, placement is not so good.

Points to consider while going through these stats:

  • I considered the rank for open-category students. If you fall into any other category, the cutoff goes low.
  • This is not the actual figure but the stats based on last year’s cutoff. Use this data only as a reference.

How to prepare for the VLSI MTech Interview?

Very few colleges offer direct admission for MTech. For other colleges, you have to give an interview.

If you are going for VLSI, you have to prepare some of the topics related to VLSI design and VLSI design tools.

Prepare for Electronics Devices and Circuits (EDC). You can expect questions from this topic. EE students don’t have this subject in their bachelor’s degree program.

So, if you are coming from an EE background, it is difficult for you to crack this interview as compared to ECE students. Not impossible.

This is all about top VLSI colleges for MTech. If you have any questions, let’s discuss this in the comment below.
